New Neighbours

What does it mean to leave a familiar, supportive Christian environment and move to a place where the gospel is rarely heard? Last August, Edward and Trix Landman took that step together with their children. Now, a year later, they look back on their first experiences.

Moving Missionally—In Your Own Country

A Completely Different World

Last year, Edward and Trix Landaman left the town of Bodegraven and moved to Maastricht to join PROEF!, a missional neighbourhood project. Even though they moved within the same country, the Netherlands, the contrast was clear from the very beginning.

“Almost everything is different here,” Trix explains. “Bodegraven is a village; Maastricht has the character and atmosphere of a southern city. Life feels more relaxed, people live more for the day. In Bodegraven, you would meet Christians on almost every street corner. Here, that is rare. Many people feel they are finished with the church, and that took some getting used to for us.”

Edward notes that there are also deeper attitudes that shape the spiritual climate. “Some people feel that, compared to other parts of the country, they don’t really count. That can lead to a certain scepticism towards authority. Spiritually, you see something similar: many still take part in traditions like communion or confirmation, but often out of custom rather than a personal, heartfelt faith.”

Putting Down Roots

For the Landman family, the first year has been about settling in—both as a family and as part of the PROEF! team. Building relationships, learning the rhythms of the neighbourhood, and simply being present have all been important steps.

“I really enjoy the encounters we have,” says Trix. “Reading the Bible together with people from the neighbourhood and seeing how God is at work in their lives—that is so special.”

Edward finds his place mostly in practical tasks. “I enjoy helping and organising alongside my work. Through practical service, relationships naturally form—and from those relationships, I can share the gospel. That fits me well.”

A Simple Prayer

As they continue their ministry, Edward and Trix carry a clear longing in their hearts: that God would be given more space in Maastricht, and that more people would come to know Him personally.

Their journey is a reminder that mission is not only about crossing borders. Sometimes it means moving within your own country—stepping out of what feels safe, trusting God, and patiently investing in people, one relationship at a time.
